Tax Deduction Account Number (TAN) is a unique 10 digit alphanumeric code allotted by the Income Tax Department to all those persons who are required to deduct tax at the source of income. It is mandatory to quote TAN on all TDS (Tax Deduction at Source) returns (including e-TDS return) or any TDS payment challan.
Documents to be submitted along with TAN application
No documents are required to be submitted along with application for allotment of TAN. However, for online application, the signed acknowledgement which is generated after filling up the form is to be forwarded to NSDL.
A person can apply just for one TAN. If you apply for a new registration of TAN, then you must surrender your old TAN before a new one is issued. Submitting an application for more than one TAN is illegal as per the provisions of the act
